SONG REVIEW: Nyfa’s “Future Song” explores our past, new reality & bleak future

Future song

Nyfa (Alexandra Werner) is Cellist and singer based in Switzerland. Her new single: “Future song” is a sonic piece you need to experience by your lonesome, because there’s a sweet aftertaste you acquire after being thrusted into Nyfa’s reflective and isolated wonderland. This introspective song is released together with a raw but touching DIY video shot on an iPhone X.

“Future Song” opens with a meaningful and reflective question: “Dear future song/are you my sweet remedy against  loneliness and fear? —Nyfa sings in low-pitch whispery vocals that melts into a realm of mournful instrumentation composed of somber cello and guitar progressions soldered with calculated bass and drum lines.
“Despite physical distance/ Our thoughts are still the same/ and if you turn them into letters/ Your poem will read”—Nyfa sings melancholically. I love the sentiments the lyrics carry, it plunges the listener’s thoughts into a pool of introspection. Although “Future Song” explores our past, new reality and bleak future, it’s also a song of hope and faith. This cohesive piece casts a hypnotic spell of the listeners.
Towards the end, there’s a beautiful spoken word delivery that makes you think about the current state of the world. The instrumentation adds a comforting, but eerie vibe to the song’s flow.

The moody DIY video for “Future Song” was shot on an iPhone X. The mundane and apocalyptic nature of video can’t  go unnoticed. The video invites us into Nyfa’s reflective and isolating world. In the video: lonely Nyfa navigates old, dilapidated buildings vandalized by graffiti art. In one scene, Nyfa dons a bunny-costume and frolics about in a desolate territory. Interestingly, insects are co-actors in this DIY music video.

The cover art is hauntingly appealing. Nyfa stares at us as if she’s seen the future, but she’s scared of it, so she’s hiding behind the tiled wall for protection.

This year has really not been an easy year, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic created a volatile environment for us all. The music industry was also hit badly by the virus. Although lots of live shows were cancelled— musicians, producers, artists and songwriters are finding new ways to fight back with respect to music creation processes, monetizing music consumption and innovative models. Independent artists are also putting out more and more music everyday.—very commendable.

“Future Song” was conceived, written and recorded during the Corona quarantine period. Without meeting, all musicians involved in the project worked from the comfort of their homes in Germany and Switzerland. Production files were sent round till the track was completed. “Future Song” was written and produced by Nyfa, who also did the vocals and played the cello.
In addition,  J.J Löw worked on drums, Timo Zell played the bass, Daniel Messina strummed the guitar and backing vocals were delivered by Leonie Bischofberger.
The track was mixed & mastered by Silvio Pfiffner. The creative process used for the production of this song is inspirational, thanks to the internet.

If you adore the sounds of Agnes Obel, Angel Olsen, Sophie Hunger, Ane Brun and Sophie Phoebe Lou, then you will have to add Nyfa’s music to your playlist.

Below is the Youtube video and lyrics for “Future Song”, enjoy!

Dear future song
Are you my sweet remedy
Against loneliness and fear

Dear future child
Will you be there for me
We’ve been told to live in isolation

Despite physical distance
Our thoughts are still the same
And if you turn them into letters
Your poem will be read

Dear future
I know you won’t be the same
Say bye-bye and reinvent yourself

Dear future friend
May patience be our lane
Now we know that greediness has messed around

Despite physical distance
Our thoughts are still the same
And if you turn them into letters
Your poem will be read

You keep me awake
Why you keep me awake

Dear future
Will you remember the past
I guess fear and hope have rarely been that close

Time has come to decide
Indifference or desire
will they keep ruling our heads
Or is there any hidden place
Where we could change our thoughts
